Out and About
We moved to Dorchester just over five years ago, having had many holidays in Dorset. It is a superb county for beauty of its countryside alone and there is so much more to explore…

Here are just a few possibilities:

rooms

Tutankhamun Exhibition - The exhibition recreates the excitement of one of the world's greatest discoveries of ancient treasure. A reconstruction of the tomb and recreations of its treasures are displayed.

Dinosaur Museum - Britain's award-winning museum devoted to dinosaurs has an appealing mixture of fossils, skeletons, life-size reconstructions and interactive displays such as the `feelies'.

Dorset Teddy Bear Museum - A visit to the museum begins with the home of Edward Bear and his extended family of human-sized teddy bears. Then, in a more traditional museum setting, view hundreds of teddy bears from throughout the last century in atmospheric and evocative displays. There is also a collectors shop with a wide range of bears from early to modern

Dorset County Museum - Displays cover prehistoric and Roman times, including sites such as Maiden Castle, and there's a gallery on Dorset writers with sections on the poet William Barnes, Thomas Hardy (with a reconstruction of his study), and 20th-century writers. There are many exhibitions from art and photography to literature and the Natural Sciences

Abbotsbury Swannery - Abbotsbury is the breeding ground of the only managed colonial herd of mute swans. The swans can be seen safely at close quarters, and the site is also home or stopping point for many wild birds. www.abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk

Monkey World - Monkey World houses over 100 primates in 60 acres of Dorset woodland. It was set up in order to rescue monkeys and apes from abuse and illegal smuggling. Free information line 0800 456600 or www.monkeyworld.org

Sea Life Park - Set in the beautiful Lodmoor Country Park. Marvel at the mysteries of the deep and discover amazing sea creatures from around our own shores in spectacular marine displays.

The Tank Museum - The Tank Museum houses the world's finest international collection of Armoured Fighting Vehicles. Tanks in Action displays are held every Thursday at noon during July-September and every Tuesday from end July to August Bank Holiday.

Lulworth Castle - Glimpse life below stairs in the restored kitchen, and enjoy beautiful views from the top of the tower of this historic castle set in beautiful parkland.

Athelhampton House & Gardens - Athelhampton, one of the finest 15th-century houses in England, contains magnificently furnished rooms including The Great Hall of 1485 and the library. The glorious Grade I gardens contain the world-famous topiary pyramids
